“Wake up, Susan.”
The room I woke up in seemed overly bright for a few moments. As my eyes adjusted, I saw the doctor. “It was a success, then?” I asked.
“Yes, it was,” he said. “Why don’t you get dressed and we can get you both checked out of here?”
‘Both checked out of here’! Yes! Now life was going to be great. The doctor left the room and I grabbed the bag I had brought with me. I had brought two bags - one for me and one for the clone. My bag had a pretty floral dress and slip-on flats. Her bag had slacks, a polo, and some loafers.
I opened my bag. Someone had made a mistake. I had the slacks. I was supposed to have a dress. Some things never changed - doctors never got it all the way right. Well, I’d just have to put on the slacks and then complain when I went to pick up my clone. I took off the silly hospital gown and put on my panties and slacks.
When I went to put on my bra, though, something on my arm caught my attention. Was it ink? Had a nurse written on my arm? I shuffled over to a mirror with my bra half on and turned my arm to it. It couldn’t be! They had tattooed us both! I was going to sue. I didn’t want a stupid blue fairy on my arm for the rest of my life. They’d better have a good skin graft program at this hospital.
I quickly put on the rest of my clothes and made to storm out of the room. My clone was standing there when I opened the door. She was dressed in the floral dress. It was a sleeveless dress - I quickly looked at her arms. She didn’t have a tattoo.
“They messed up,” I said. “I got the stupid tattoo.” I pushed the arm of the polo up and showed my clone the tattoo.
“They didn’t mess up,” she said. “I’m the original.” She smiled and it looked stupid. The stupidest smile on the ugliest face - they messed up her face, too.
“But, I...” I thought about it. They never said the clone wouldn’t have memories or feelings. They never said the clone wouldn’t think it was me.
“Come on, it’s the weekend,” she said. “You have some chores to do around the house and I have a date.”
God, they even made her a bitch.
